I remember the first time I walked into our local community center
when I was a kid. Everything was a big unknown, and my head was
filled with a million questions. Who are these people? What
can I do here? How do I go about doing it? I see something
interesting, will someone show me how to do that? Perhaps the biggest
question of all was, "Do I fit in?"
If you get a kick out of welcoming new members to There, here are
some points to consider in helping them 'fit in.'
- Creating an Identity: Show them how to use
the spa and try-it machines to customize their look.
- Communicating: Help them communicate in
chat bubbles, chat groups, IMs, and with emotes.
- Playing: Lend a vehicle. Tell them about
paintball, racing,
spades,
or questing. Show them good party places. Tell them about
skilling up.
- Finding Fun: Show them how to find fun events on
Happening Now.
- Movement: Show them how to get around
via walking, running, teleport, search, and the There Maps.
- Meeting People: Help them learn about who hangs
out in There. Start them out with a nice conversation and bring
in a few other avatars if you can manage it. Keep things friendly
and accepting. Show them how to find clubs or activities where
they might connect with people of their own interests or age.
Show them how to find populated locations and events.
- Protection: Show them how to protect
themselves against bullies and other predators. Show them how
to use forcefield and ignore, how to teleport away, and how to contact
the abuse team by clicking Get Help>>Live Help.
- Answers: Be prepared to answer their questions
about There. These are usually related to becoming a premium
member, getting
bux, clothes, and houses.
